SilkSeam Soft Underscrub for Nurses
The soft underscrub for long, hard shifts. The SilkSeam is the base layer we reach for when the day is going to be heavy and we want the fabric against the skin to feel like nothing. Buttery-soft modal with silk-touch finish, precision-flat seams, and the close-but-easy fit that disappears under any scrub top.
A smooth, friction-free feel with a focus on seamless comfort. The SilkSeam Long Sleeve Underscrub is meticulously designed for healthcare professionals who refuse to choose between feeling comfortable and staying focused. Engineered with precision-seamless construction and buttery-soft fabric, this underscrub moves with you, not against you, so you can concentrate on what matters most.
Why "soft" matters on a 12-hour shift
By hour eight of a hard shift, the fabric against your skin stops being a background detail and starts being the loudest thing in the room. A coarse cotton tee that felt fine in the parking lot at 6 a.m. becomes a low-grade irritation you can't unsee. A seam that you didn't notice during your morning huddle becomes the only thing you think about during your post-lunch charting block. We built the SilkSeam for the nurse who's been through this — the one who wants a soft underscrub that's still soft at hour twelve.
The 80% modal / 20% spandex blend is what makes the SilkSeam feel the way it does. Modal is a regenerated cellulose fiber finer than cotton, with a smooth surface that picks up less drag against the skin and holds a soft hand even after repeated wash cycles. The spandex content gives the fabric enough recovery to stay close to the body without going limp by the end of a shift. The result is a soft underscrub that gets softer with wear instead of breaking down.
The silk-touch finish is what separates the SilkSeam from a regular modal jersey. During finishing, the fabric is processed to give the surface a near-silk drape and a softer-than-soft hand-feel against the skin. The silk-touch effect isn't a coating that washes off — it comes from the fiber treatment itself, which means the silk-feel survives repeated wash cycles instead of disappearing after the first laundry day. For a 12-hour shift, that's the difference between an underscrub that feels soft on day one and an underscrub that's still soft months in.

Fit & sizing
The SilkSeam runs close to the body without being a compression fit. Closer than a tee, easier than the FlexForm. Sleeves end at the wrist with a soft flat cuff. Hem hits at the high hip and stays put when you bend over a patient or squat to plug in equipment. The crew neckline sits flat enough to disappear under a V-neck scrub top while still giving you full coverage at the collarbone.
Order your usual top size. If you prefer a slightly looser hand against the skin (rare for this fabric — most people order true to size), size up one. Full measurements on our size guide.
Evidence panel
Claim: SilkSeam fabric is 80% modal / 20% spandex with a silk-touch finish, designed to retain soft hand-feel through repeated wash cycles.
Method: Composition verified per mill spec sheet. Hand-feel retention assessed by founder wear-testing across repeated wash intervals.
Source: Ala Underscrubs founder wear-testing + production records, 2025-2026.
Limitations: Hand-feel is qualitative and self-reported. We have not commissioned third-party softness testing (no widely-accepted apparel standard for this property).
Date last updated: 2026-06-03
Claim: Modal fiber pulls moisture off the skin and dries faster than cotton at the same fabric weight.
Method: Property of modal fiber — published material-science data from the fiber producer.
Source: Modal-fiber technical literature (publicly available).
Limitations: Modal is not a performance-athletic wicking fiber. We don't claim athletic-grade wicking — this is a soft underscrub, not a running shirt.

Care instructions
Machine wash cold on a regular cycle with like colors. Tumble dry low or hang dry — hanging extends the soft hand-feel a few more cycles. No fabric softener (it coats the modal fibers and reduces the silk-touch quality you bought the SilkSeam for). No bleach. The modal-spandex blend holds its softness through repeated wash cycles when cared for this way.
Pairs with
SilkSeam is the soft underscrub for the day you want the fabric against the skin to disappear. Pair it under any of our scrub tops or your existing scrub set. For high-movement shifts where you also want a smoother silhouette, the FlexForm Compression Long Sleeve runs closer to the body. For cold ORs, the ThermoLite Mockneck adds thermal warmth. For maximum bulk-free seamless layering, the AeroKnit removes seams entirely. See the full shop all underscrubs collection.
Founder note
"I wear this on the days I know are going to be long and heavy. There's a difference between a soft underscrub on hour one and a soft underscrub on hour eleven, and the SilkSeam is the one I trust on both. That's the whole brief — the fabric you forget you're wearing because it doesn't ask anything of you."
— Alanah, co-founder
Why this price
Modal-spandex blends cost more than cotton, and we hold the SilkSeam to a higher quality control standard than most base layers — the silk-touch finish only stays right if the fabric is sourced and finished carefully, and we reject lots that don't meet the spec instead of running them through anyway. We don't run flash sales and we ship from St. George, Utah so returns and exchanges work. The price is what it costs to make a soft underscrub for shifts that's still soft many washes in.
